Admissions Requirements

Any student who has graduated from high school, or who has obtained a General Education Diploma (GED), or who is 18 years of age, is eligible for admission. Admission to Bay College does not ensure placement in all courses or programs. Many courses have prerequisites, and some programs have additional admission requirements. Students who do not meet the admission criteria may apply for special admission.

Bay College reserves the right to refuse admission and/or continued enrollment if the College determines that the applicant/student is a threat or potential danger to the college community or if such refusal is considered in the best interest of the College.

Bay College retains the right to deny/revoke admission/enrollment of any applicant or student who was convicted of a crime requiring listing on the sex offender registry. A registered sex offender is defined as any person who is required pursuant to State or Federal law to be registered on any Criminal Information Network and/or the National Crime Information Center Convicted Sexual Offender registry. Bay College will monitor the sex offender registry list to identify persons on the list who have been convicted of a crime requiring listing on the sex offender registry and are applying for admission to or enrolled in Bay College. Individuals convicted of a crime requiring listing on the sex offender registry are required to inform the Director of Admissions of their status at the time they seek admission to the College. Failure to comply with notification requirements may result in immediate denial of admission or expulsion from the College.

Student Orientation

Student Orientation is designed to introduce students to policies and procedures as well as provide valuable tools to assist with college success. Required for new students, Student Orientation is recommended for all students. Orientation delivery methods vary by semester and by student.

Residency Guidelines

Educational costs at Bay de Noc Community College are shared by students, the taxpayers of Delta and Dickinson Counties, and the State of Michigan. Property taxes paid by residents of Delta County and Dickinson County supplement student tuition and state aid for Delta County or Dickinson County status students.

At Bay College, a student’s residency determines the tuition rate. A student’s residency is collected on the application for admission or at the initial semester of enrollment. The College has the right to verify a student’s place of residence. Please see Board Policy 4002 for further information.

1. Delta County or Dickinson County resident:
   • A student whose intended true, fixed and permanent residence is located within either Delta or Dickinson County, and to which the individual intends to return whenever he/she is absent from the College.
   • A student who has moved to Delta or Dickinson County for the primary purpose of employment.
   • A student who has married a resident of Delta or Dickinson County and takes up residence in that county.
2. Michigan or Reciprocity County resident
   • A student who resides within Michigan but not within Delta or Dickinson County.
   • A student residing in one of the following Wisconsin reciprocity counties: Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Brown, Burnette, Door, Douglas, Florence, Forest, Iron, Kewaunee, Langlade, Lincoln, Marinette, Oconto, Oneida, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer, Shawano, Vilas, Washburn.
3. Out of State
   • A student whose residency is outside of Michigan and not within a reciprocity county listed above.
   • A student who is a foreign national requiring international student services, will be considered an out of state student.
4. International​
   • ​​​​​​A student whose residency is outside of the United States.
5. Military
   • The following individuals will be charged the in-state tuition unless he/she qualifies as a Delta or Dickinson County resident as described in section 1 above:
   • Any individual using educational assistance under either Chapter 30 (Montgomery GI Bill® - Active Duty Program), Chapter 35 (Survivors and Dependents), Chapter 33 (Post-9/11 GI Bill®), of title 38 United States Code, and/or the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship (38 U.S.C. § 311(b)(9)) who lives in the State of Michigan while attending Bay de Noc Community College (regardless of student’s formal state of residence) (GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Change of Residence Status: Changes in residency status will be initiated at the time a student updates their address with the institution. Any adjustments made in tuition due to a change in residency status shall not be retroactive nor changed within a semester.

Residency Audit: Bay de Noc Community College may verify residency during periods of enrollment. Discrepancies in residency information may result in a hold preventing the student from registering for the next semester until the conflicting information has been resolved. Students who have deliberately misrepresented information or have falsified documents may be subject to disciplinary action.

Assessment/Placement

Students participate in a Guided Self-Placement Process with an advisor or co-advisor. During this, high school GPA and/or the year a student has last attended high school helps indicate initial placement into courses. MATH102 Introduction to Technical Math and BUSN 177 Business Math may be taken without a support course regardless of GPA or years out of high school.

If the student has been out of high school for more than 10 years and/or has a GPA of 2.49 or lower, the following gateway courses, combined with a support course, will be recommended. A student may also be encouraged to take a free Bay College assessment such as Accuplacer or ALEKS, so the results can further the discussion about academic preparedness and courses most likely to result in success.

English:

• ENGL 098C Rhetoric and Composition Support and ENGL 101 Rhetoric and Composition with Support

Math, depending on major:

• MATH 095C Intermediate Algebra Support and MATH 105 Intermediate Algebra with Support
• MATH 097C Liberal Arts Mathematics Support and MATH 107 Liberal Arts Mathematics with Support

If the student has been out of school for less than 10 years and has a GPA or 2.5 or higher, the following gateway courses will be recommended. Dual Enrollment and Early College students will be placed into courses based on PSAT, SAT, and ACT. GPA will not be used for placement unless they are Early Middle College students going into their 5th year. Although a 2.5 GPA qualifies a student for MATH 105 or MATH 107, placement into a higher-level math course requires an appropriate score on the ACT, SAT, ALEKS, or transfer credit of a qualifying course.

English:

Math, depending on major:

• MATH 105 Intermediate Algebra
• MATH 107 Liberal Arts Mathematics

Placement Tables

Bay College uses computerized assessment tools to determine academic preparedness and satisfy prerequisites. These tools are free to Bay College students. The results are used to place students in the appropriate classes. Placement can also be completed by sending official college transcripts. Courses with a minimum grade of “C” in the equivalent of a college-level freshman composition course and a college-level algebra course, based on official documentation will waive the coordinating placement requirement.

Assessment Information

Math Assessment

ALEKS is the assessment tool used to determine placement in Math. The online ALEKS Placement Assessment covers material from basic math through precalculus and is designed to determine what you know. We want you to start in the math course that best fits your skill level, while keeping you on track to complete your degree. Being placed in a class that is below your skill level could delay your time to graduation and result in unnecessary tuition. To prepare for the test, you can use the resources listed in the “Take Math First” brochure below. You may also visit the ALEKS website to sign up for a free trial.

ALEKS will provide an on-screen calculator if you need one to complete a particular problem. Otherwise, you may not use a calculator. There is no time limit on any of our placement tests. However, on average each test can take one hour but differs from student to student. English, Reading, and Writing Assessment

The ACCUPLACER is the placement tool used to help determine academic readiness in English, Writing and Reading. This program uses a multiple-choice format with computer-adaptive technology (except for WritePlacer, the written essay assessment). Questions are presented based on individual skill level. Response to each question drives the difficulty level of the next question. It’s important to give each question as much thought as possible before selecting an answer. Students who wish to take ACCUPLACER elsewhere and send Bay College the scores should note that Bay College uses the “Next Generation Reading” and “WritePlacer” assessments.
