History and Organization

Located in the heart of Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula, Bay de Noc Community College (commonly known as Bay College) provides a rich tradition of quality, higher education opportunities. Founded in 1962 by the citizens of Delta County, Bay de Noc Community College opened its doors to students in the fall of 1963. Since starting in the old Escanaba Area High School building, the campus has grown to its current location, a 150-acre connected campus located in the City of Escanaba’s northeast quadrant.

From its modest beginnings of approximately 200 students, the student population now approaches 2000 students registered for credit courses. Students enroll in programs of study that include career certificates, associate degrees, transfer credentials and degrees, and community leadership opportunities.

Bay College expanded into Dickinson County and beyond in the late 1970s, opening a West Campus in 2007 located on the north side of Iron Mountain. A Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC) opened its doors in 2000 hosting more than 50,000 visits each year in a variety of conference, training, and meeting activities. A high-tech performing arts center, the Besse Center, opened in 2008 hosting student and community events. Co-located on the Escanaba campus is also the Delta Northern Lights YMCA and Besse Recreation Complex including community soccer fields, walking trails and a labyrinth.

A seven-member Board of Trustees, elected officials from the College’s service area, govern Bay College. Trustees are responsible for setting policy direction for the College. Along with the board, experienced and caring faculty, staff, and administrative team are all committed to student and community success. Bay College is your community college.
